To Dye Or Not To Dye

I have a confession. Until recently I was a hair dye virgin.

My natural dark brown hair and fair skin didn't really leave me with many options. I don't have to go blonde to know it would be a disaster.

Sure I could get highlights or lowlights but I've never been convinced it would make enough of a lasting impact.

To make it worth it, I would need to change my hair colour radically. The idea of doing this to my hair sends shivers down my spine.

But then a funny thing happened.

Miu Miu released it's SS13 ad campaign and I was suddenly daydreaming of being the proud owner of lush red hair. Formerly brunette Bette Franke did such a convincing red head turn that I began to think: why couldn't I?

And so I did.

I went to a professional colourist despite being so nervous that I was shaking. Two or so hours later I looked more or less like Bette Franke in these campaigns. Minus the long legs. And the face. And the body. But pretty darned close.

So if you find ever yourself faced with the question to dye or not to dye...

TV Heroines

I feel like it has been a 80s and 90s inspired week at the Miss Masquerade headquarters (aka my couch).

In fact, 2013 is turning into an 80s and 90s inspired year thanks to the likes of Dries Van Noten, Saint Laurent et al taking their models through a time warp for both the Spring and Autumn collections.

This isn't a Beverly Hills 90210 rewind, this is a come are you are: plaid clad and with smudged eye liner.

All the same TVs heroines of past will never cease to induce a 'totes amaze' from me.

Just Wing It

The cat (or winged) eye never really goes out of style but this season it got the runway re-vamp. Emilio Pucci did it with bangs, Christian Dior did it in silver and Dolce & Gabbana did it with red lipstick.

Unfortunately, I did it badly. The biggest obstacle in my quest for cat eye domination was that I was lacking the proper tools of the trade.

That's where Bobbi Brown came in. There are a million eye liners out there: liquid, gel or pencil. This particular one is great for a beginner as it goes on easily as thick or thin as you like and stays for hours. It is worth investing in a brush too. A good brush can mean the difference between achieving alluring feline eyes and looking like your kid sister drew on your face while you slept.

Start from the inner corner of the eye and gently line the lid all the way to your natural corner crease. This particular liner gives you time to fix the edges and smooth the line before it sets. If you muck up keep some cotton buds on hand to wipe and go rather than smudging in the mistake with your fingers.
Stick with black until you master your line. Trust me only a razor-shape line can pull off colours.
